Wrestling With Third-Graders

Well that's what substitute teaching feels like sometimes....   I am tired.

Here are a couple of old sketches.  Just so if anyone is still looking at this blog, they'll know it's still alive....

  1. Dad always told Christa, "all you have to do is shoot the first one that misbehaves and you won't have any problems the rest of the year!"

I don't know if you heard about the school up north for troubled kids to have a shot at college? They have a demerit system and dress code that is strict. So many demerits and they get detention. The kids have to pay a fine for detention as well. They have the highest state scores and graduation rate due to the strict discipline yet there are still people complaining that they are wrong to discipline the kids. A sign of the times I suppose.

    1. So true. Well I didn't shoot anybody :) but I did apply some negative (as well as positive) consequences -- that they cared about --- and the class settled down pretty well by the end of the week. Kids will always test you, to a greater or lesser degree, and once you make a few examples, behavior improves! It's draining, though, and you always have to be on your toes.
